Internet Etiquette

Behaving Online - by Dr. Margie Massey, CSU-Pueblo, Technology (with some modifications for ELLs)

As with any face-to-face class, there are proper rules of etiquette that any learner should follow. Since an online learning environment relies on communication over the Internet, here are a few rules of etiquette to keep in mind while communicating with others:* Please promptly report any violations of these rules to Ms. Jackson.

* Keep your communications short, yet concise. Try to limit your messages to one subject.
* Use abbreviations and text jargon minimally.
* Don't shout. This means that you refrain from using all CAPITAL LETTERS in your messages.
* Don't mumble. This means that you refrain from using all small letters in your messages.
* Don't criticize people. Everyone makes mistakes.
*
Ignore spelling errors and other simple errors made in messages.
* Online correspondence should contain appropriate salutations (greetings), not only content.
* Follow the same standards of politeness [and respect] as you do in life.
